Jurjen Hempel continues as an artistic director of the Joensuu City Orchestra

The new engagement continues till spring 2019


Joensuu City Orchestra has made a new contract with the artistic director Jujen Hempel. He will be orchestra’s artistic director till spring 2019.

During his first three-year-period Hempel has brought courageously new repertoire and high-level soloists and conductors for the orchestra. Continuation of cooperation will guarantee orchestras development.

Jurjen Hempel studied conducting with David Porcelijn and Kenneth Montgomery at the Utrecht Conservatory. On invitation of Seiji Ozawa, he studied at the Tanglewood Conducting Class. He was finalist and prize-winner at the first Sibelius Conductors Competition in May 1996 in Helsinki. After that he has conducted in Finland regularly.

His reputation as a conductor of contemporary music leads him to work on a regular base with ensembles as London Sinfonietta, the Asko Ensemble, the Nieuw Ensemble, the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, Ensemble Contrechamps in Geneva, the Sch?nberg Ensemble, and Orkest de Volharding. He is also Chef-conductor with the Netherlands Youth Orchestra.
