Nicholas Söderlund

Bass Nicholas Söderlund (b.1977) started his singing studies at the Turku Conservatory and the Sibelius Academy youth education with teachers Hannu Kerkola and Sauli Tiilikainen. He continued his studies at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg with prof. Heiner Hopfner. After returning to Finland, Söderlund studied at the Sibelius Academy with Peter Lindroos and Erkki Rajamäki. Söderlund graduated from Sibelius Academy in 2008.

Nicholas Söderlund won the second prize at the Lappeenranta Singing Competition in 2006 and was the second prize winner in the international Sibelius Singing Competition in 2007. Söderlund received the Finnish Wagner Society's Bayreuth Scholarship and Martti Talvela -Foundation award in 2007 and Karita Mattila -scholarship in 2009.

Nicholas Söderlund is an active concert singer and has performed as a soloist with many Finnish orchestra’s. As an oratorio- and Lied-singer he has performed in the Nordic countries, Russia, Estonia, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy among others. Söderlund made his professional opera debut at the Finnish National Opera in 2007 in Fredrik Pacius’ opera Kung Karls jakt in Wachtmeister’s role. Since then he has been a regular guest at the Finnish National Opera. Among the roles in Söderlund’s opera repertoire are Sprecher in Mozart’s Magic Flute, Schanunard and Colline in Puccini’s La Bohème, Wagner in Gounod’s Faust, Fléville in Giordano’s Andrea Chénier and Marquis D’Obigny in Verdi’s La Traviata. In Finnish opera’s Söderlund’s roles have included Vallesmanni in Madetoja’s Pohjalaisia, Juri in Kortekangas’ Isän tyttö and Pentti Haanpää in Panula’s Joutilas mies. In 2008-2009 Söderlund was engaged to Basel Opera in Switzerland. Among the roles in 2014-15 season were Antonio in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, Frank in Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus and roles in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen at the Finnish National Opera. Future plans in 2015-16 include roles of Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte) in Turku and Trulove (The Rake’s Progress) and Sacristan (Tosca) in Finnish National Opera. Söderlund will also be part of the new production of Shostakovich’s Nose at FNO and will sing the role of Handwerksbursch in Wozzeck at Helsinki Festival 2015. Söderlund sang his debut at the Savonlinna Opera festival in summer 2014 and has been invited to join the festival productions in 2015 and 2016.  

Nicholas Söderlund has made several recordings for the Finnish Broadcasting Company. He is particularly active performer of the contemporary Finnish music and has premiered pieces from Olli Kortekangas, Jouni Kaipainen, Pasi Lyytikäinen, Jukka Linkola, Juhani Haapasalo and Harri Kerkko. Söderlund is a singer with versatile musicianship and he is at home with many musical styles as well as cross-artistic projects.
