Arktinen Hysteria

The Arktinen Hysteria (Arctic Hysteria) wind quintet is one of Finland’s leading chamber music ensembles. Founded nine years ago, it is today one of the few Finnish wind quintets operating on a regular basis. The quintet has studied with Ilpo Mansnerus, Teemu Kupiainen and Mikael Helasvuo at the Sibelius Academy and completed chamber music examinations with the highest marks. In 2001, Arktinen Hysteria was among the top six quintets at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich.

Arktinen Hysteria has enlivened the Finnish music scene with concerts at the Turku Music Festival, the Korsholma Music Festival and the Crusell Week in Uusikaupunki. Its objective is to promote the cause of chamber music for winds, and to this end it has given the world premieres of the Third Wind Quintet of P.H. Nordgren and new works by Ulf Långbacka and Maija Hynninen. In 2006, the ensemble premiered a wind quintet appropriately entitled Arktinen Hysteria by Atso Almila at the Crusell Week in Uusikaupunki. The quintet has frequently appeared abroad, for instance in Berlin, Malta, Bucharest, Malmö and Hancock (USA).
