Kurt Kopecky

Kurt Kopecky is music director of the Icelandic Opera in Reykjavik and plays an important role in Iceland’s music life as a conductor, piano accompanist and vocal coach. In addition to his opera work he conducts the Iceland Symphony Orchestra in concert and in recordings for the Icelandic Broadcasting Company RÚV and has made his highly successful debut at the Reykjavík Arts Festival in 2006. The Icelandic Opera was given the Icelandic Music Award for its production of Britten’s “The Turn of the Screw” in 2005. In spring 2009 he has been appointed piano coach and conductor at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki and will begin at his new position in August 2009.

Kurt Kopecky was born in Austria and graduated from the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Wien in 2000. Having played the piano from early age, his studies in Vienna comprised orchestra and chorus conducting and piano accompaniment with special emphasis on the operatic repertoire. 

2000-2003 Kurt Kopecky was conductor and piano accompanist at the opera house of Biel/Solothurn in Switzerland. In 2003 he was appointed music director of the Icelandic Opera. In 2006 he made his debut at the Finnish National Opera and has since then regularly returned there to conduct both opera and ballet performances.

On the concert podium Kurt Kopecky has conducted such orchestras as the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, National Orchestra of Porto, Tonkünstler Orchestra, San José Chamber Orchestra, Biel Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Phoenix Basel, Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Oulu Symphony Orchestra, Kuopio Symphony Orchestra and several other Finnish orchestras.
